to wedding fair or not to wedding fair...?

I have my 3rd wedding fair on Sun 8 Nov at Wroxall Abbey and am wondering what to expect from this one. Having only done 2 I cannot say I am an authority, but I am very skeptical as to wheter or not they will pay off. I came across so many people at the last two who only seemed to be there quaffing the free champagne and samples!
I will weigh up after this one if I will put myself up for anymore as I think my money, time and cupcakes could be better invested elsewhere. Be honest - how many of you have been to wedding fairs just for a day out?

  1. I too remain rather sceptical of wedding fairs, although at least you have got into a couple. In my experience they tend to be very much a closed shop, with a "we only invite back people, in my case 'wedding photographers', who have been with us before." I think I will organise one of my own with a restricted audience... ie. just one sole wedding photographer! One cake designer! One wedding planner! And so on...

So you have my sympathy with this dilemma...

  2. Mike - I totally agree. There are only a few places that have one of each type of service which I think is only fair. When they have 5 of each service in the same room it is not good as they are the only ones making money. Most are only interested in selling their venue and not about the 'little people'. I think your idea of doing your own with one of each is a great one - go for it! I was only making up the numbers as they already had the same people who come year after year. I have done 3 and one one was well organised and professional. the others could not have given a scooby...time to look at other options

  3. I've also done two weddings fairs now - six months apart and yet a lot of the same freeloading faces!

I don't mind giving a sample to a bride, and her friend/mother/groom to be if they're likely to talk her into buying from me.
But I had a bride say (after tasting) that she had her cake already booked, and yet her mother still expected a sample of EACH of the six varieties of cupcakes I had on show! She couldn't understand why I said no, because 'they were free anyway'...

  4. Hey Bite Doncaster - for the 3 I have done I saw a lot of the same faces milling around too. I call then tyre kickers!! I find that people too where asking for samples and then telling me they had the cake booked - cheeky!
